Webelos X-treme

Troop 27 and Crew 27 participated in the BSA Pacific Skyline Council’s annual Webelos X-treme Event. Our scouts and associated Venturing Crew setup and operated 2 fun activities: a climbing tripod and canoe catamarans. The event allows Webelos to experience some Boy Scout activities, lets Webelos families become familiar with some Boy Scout troops and facilitates bridging from Cub Scouts.

Canoeing & Sunset Beach Camping
The Elkhorn Slough is one of 27 National Estuarine Research Reserves established nationwide as field laboratories for scientific research and estuarine education. It is the largest tidal wetland marsh in California after San Francisco Bay.
On Saturday the troop paddled our fleet of canoes into Elkhorn Slough, finishing just before the tide would have been against us. During the tour of the slough we had an opportunity to enjoy the local wildlife, while continuing to build on canoe skills. We camped at Sunset Beach where scouts had an opportunity to work on skills, enjoy a beach campfire, and learned about astronomy while gazing into the nighttime sky. After a hot breakfast and a discussion on a bluff overlooking the ocean on Sunday morning, we cleaned up one mile of the beach, packed our lunches and explored the museum at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.
San Francisco Bay Sailing

The San Francisco Bay is considered one of the most fun and windiest places to sail in the world and it is right in our backyard. Some days it can be foggy and some days sunny. Sailing in the bay can be very rough and wet so wear layers. On the other hand, sailing can be beautiful with the view of the Golden Gate and San Francisco.
This year, the 34th America’s Cup races were held in San Francisco. It is a sailing race dating back to 1851 and has boats that go up to more than 45 knots. Safety is a priority, and all scouts wore PFDs at all times. We sailed most of the day and had own sack lunch on board. The America’s Cup races took place that day. This was a good opportunity for scouts to experience sailing activity and practice their scout skills. Sailing involves the use of lots of knots.

A fun winter challenge involving snow camping and competition: sled race, jumbo ski, showshoe relay, spear throw, fire building, snowball toss, “tobacco” spit, ice rescue, moon ball, hasty shelter building and snow snake. Troops are encouraged to bring patrol sleds, built by Scouts, for the sled race.

Family Ski Trip 2013

Once again, we are heading out to Camp Sylvester, with Skiing or/and Snowboard at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort, Pinecrest, CA. The cost of the outing is $68.00 per person, which includes all meals and lodging. Ski/snowboard tickets and rentals at DodgeRidge are separate, but we have arrange group rates. There is plenty of room, so families may invite guests, scouts can bring their friends. Lodging at Camp Sylvester is cabin style, each cabin sleeps 10 on bunk beds, be prepared to share a cabin with other scouters. There are community bathrooms and shower facilities. Bring your own bedding, sleeping bag, pillow, towel etc. There is no TV, bring your favorite board game.
Arrive Friday night for an early start to the slopes on Saturday morning after breakfast. We will take sandwich fixings, drinks etc. to Dodge Ridge Ski Resort and gather for lunch, share a few laughs or just hang out at the lodge. Ski or snowboard all day, Camp Sylvester is just 10 minutes away.
Come join us for the weekend – ski downhill, snowboard and/or just play in the snow, you decide.

Yosemite Outing

Continuing our recent tradition, this fall we will return to Yosemite and some of the most spectacular views in North America. We will camp in the valley, hike at least one scenic trail, enjoy good food and have a fun campfire.

Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to camp and spend the night on Angel Island for a service project, night hike with great views of the San Francisco Bay, tour of the US Immigration Center. You can sign up at the weekly Tuesday night meetings, limited to 45 people, so sign up early.

We continue to build skills that have been well practiced at Summer Camp. Most of the boys will have either earned, or nearly earned, the Canoeing Merit badge at Summer Camp. This outing is typically a 10+ mile tour of a Class1-2 river. We spend Saturday practicing, and Sunday touring. What a great way to enjoy the dog days of summer – on a cool river!
